Ep.516 – Talking With The Immortal John Hancock

John joins Dan and Kris for a chat about Atari and more!

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris were joined by The Immortal John Hancock! John was nice enough to come on the show and chat all about his YouTube channel, how he got started, his love of retro games, and more. He also went into the process of publishing his Atari 2600 physical and digital games, and was genuinely a nice fella. What a guy!

At the top of the show, all three of our hosts went on about just how difficult it is to find time to play games when there’s all this “adulting” to do! But Dan did manage to find his regular time for Marvel Snap and PAD, while Kris and John talked about their time with Goliath Depot, a great indie game with a frankly terrible name.

Finally, in Week Old News, Atari buys Intellivision, while IGN basically buys the internet. Minecraft celebrates 15 years of being an insanely popular blocky mess, Activision threatens to open a new studio to close in a year or two, Super Mario 64 sees a couple of crazy breakthroughs, and a whole lot more! Enjoy!

Ep.515 – SAG Episode 515: The Best Super NES Soundtracks Part 2

May-nia is BACK… AGAIN! What’s the best SNES soundtrack of all time?

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, it’;s time for the conclusion of May-nia 2024! This year’s topic is Super NES soundtracks, and Dan is making Kris make some dreadful decisions. He’s plugged IGN’s best SNES games of all time list into a tournament-style bracket system and is making Kris choose which ones he likes best. Round one had some easy choices in there, but this time around it’s going to be even tougher to choose. What will happen? This is a shorter show than usual because of a scheduling conflict, so sadly there’s no Week Old News, What's New at SAG, or any of our other regular segments. Things should return to normal next week.

Tales of Kenzera Zau

On this week’s podcast, May-nia has returned! This year’s topic is Super NES soundtracks, and Dan is making Kris make some dreadful decisions. He’s plugged IGN’s best SNES games of all time list into a tournament-style bracket system and is making Kris choose which ones he likes best. Round one had some easy choices in there, but set up some truly dreadful decisions to be made next week. How will he choose? HOW??? At the top of the show, Kris got back into Horizon Chase 2 for a bit, enjoyed the heck out of the new Vampire Survivors DLC, and absolutely hated, HATED, Knights of the Old Republic. He was also fortunate enough to get his hands on Goliath Depot, a new arcade-style action game all about closing doors. It’s great! Meanwhile, Dan went on and on about Marel Snap for a bit, but also got to spend some quality time with Tales of Kenzera Zau, a new exploratory adventure game that just so happens to be really freaking cool! Finally, in Week Old News, Pokemon Go players are inventing beaches, Nintendo and Capcom are making absurd amounts of money by not trying to make all of the money, Sony gets bullied into being slightly less awful about the whole Helldivers 2 situation, and Dan and Kris weigh in on the big Microsoft studio closures of the week. Enjoy!

Ep.513 – SAG Episode 513: Alphabet Soup-er series - Montezuma’s Return

Is this “classic” Game Boy game worth discovering, or should it stay buried?

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris get together for a new entry in the Alphabet Soup-er Series. For Kris’s pick, he went with Montexuma’s Return for Game Boy Color as his M game, and well, it didn’t go so well. Does this deeply flawed GameBoy game have any redeeming qualities? Why did Kris find it so charming? What does this all have to do with Diarrhea? Let’s find out!
At the top of the show, Dan and Kris fall into a Star Wars hole thanks to the return of Episode I in theaters, while Dan has a hard time focusing. Kris was exhausted from three whole days of yard work, but did he find time to play anything other than Dadish 3D? PRobably not, but who knows?
Finally, in Week Old News, a cool new Kickstarter launches about Lady Death, Vampire Survivors continues to be the gift that keeps on giving, and Nintendo has RUTHLESSLY CENSORED Paper Mario… or have they???? And of course, there’s the whole Limited Run Games CD-R debacle. How do the fellas feel about it? Listen on to find out. Enjoy!

Ep.512 – SAG Episode 512: Cartoon Express: Sonic the Hedgehog - No Brainer

All aboard the SAG Cartoon Express for another “Classic” Sonic cartoon!

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris climb aboard the SAG Cartoon Express to discuss another classic Sonic the Hedgehog episode, but not THAT Sonic the Hedgehog show. The OTHER Sonic show that was airing at the same time, which was just called Sonic the Hedgehog. Not confusing at all! Anyway, the episode was called No Brainer, and it certainly was an episode of a TV show. But was it better than The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog? How did Sonic survive after eating a chili dog from a vending machine in a sewer? Who put that vending machine there in the first place? We may never know. At the top of the show, Kris explains why he was sick for most of the week, and why he wound up freezing cold, watching The Flash on his phone on the floor of the local mall. Meanwhile, Dan had to drive extreme distances for a combination of hospital visits and specialized chicken finger restaurants. Meanwhile, Cave Story is still excellent, Dadish 3D delivers hot Dadish action in 3 dimensions, Pokemon Scarlet is exactly as janky as everyone said, and more!
Finally, in Week Old News, Tomb Raider has been CENSORED by the woke agenda!!! OR HAS IT?!? Sensationalist headlines would have you believe it was a nefarious plot to suck all the joy out of viewing tiny, out of focus JPEGs of a hyper-polygonal Lara Croft, but is there more to the story? Plus, Infogrames is back (and still hard to pronounce), an interview about the Tetris CD-i soundtrack is saved, Nintendo 64 NSO gets a rather bizarre update, and a whole lot more. Enjoy!

Ep.511 – SAG Episode 511: What Games Came Out in April 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014?

Could this be the most underwhelming 10-20-30-40 ever?

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris dive into what can only be described as the most unbelievably dull 10-20-30-40 in the show’s history. That is, of course, until they get to the 30, where both the Super NES and Sega Genesis had some absolutely stellar months featuring the likes of Streets of Rage 3, King of Dragons, and Super Metroid. But just how bland were the rest of the decades? Did the Wii U actually have the best release of the month? Let’s find out!
At the top of the show, Dan had some adventures in water heating this week when his existing heater broke, and the joys of trying to fix/replace it commenced! Meanwhile, Kris started watching Fallout, finished his Dadish replays, and enjoyed the exploits of a turnip committing tax evasion.
Finally, in Week Old News, Hallmark revealed their awesome new gaming-themed holiday ornaments, a variation of the Konami Code was discovered in everyone’s least-favorite Castlevania game, Nintendo’s latest Indie World showcase left Dan unimpressed and Kris delighted, and a whole lot more!

Ep.510 – SAG Episode 510: Was Game Boy Advance Better Than Super NES?

Which classic Nintendo platform had the better library?

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris tackle a listener request that’s a much tougher question to answer than it might seem. Which console’s library was better? The Super NES or the Game Boy Advance? With so many amazing games on each system, it’s a tough call, but the guys are going to try their best, and probably wind up wasting a whole lot of time because well, that’s what they do best!
At the top of the show, Dan and Kris quickly dove into a lengthy conversation about X-Men 97 and how it’s so good even Dan likes it! Also Kris talks about how episode 5 put a huge dent in his week, but thankfully The Bad Batch’s consistent mediocrity was able to calm him down. Dan has had some issues with Marvel Snap lately, and he goes to great lengths to explain what they are and why they bother him. I’d tell you what they are, but I honestly wasn’t paying any attention. Kris beat Princess Peach Showtime and worked his way onto Dadish 2 in preparation for Dadish 3D!
Finally, in Week Old News, Polygon compiles a list of terrible potential names for the Switch 2, Vampire Survivors finally comes to PlayStation and it’s bringing Contra along for the ride, Ubisoft dumps some exhausting pricing schemes on us for their new Star Wars game, and a whole lot more!

Ep.509 – Alphabet Soup-er Series - Life Force

That’s one big Salamander!

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris bring you the latest installment in the Alphabet Soup-er Series, where they discuss games once a month in alphabetical order. It was Dan’s pick for the letter L and he went with Life Force for NES, a game that’s anything but an L. Konami once again showed off their prowess on the NES with this wonderfully brilliant (and very difficult) scrolling shooter, complete with sounds and effects ripped straight out of Contra. How did this NES port hold up to its arcade-based big brothers? Let's Find out! At the top of the show, Dan complains that Sony has ruined The Show in its latest update, and discusses the difficulties in dealing with Thanos in Marvel Snap. Meanwhile, Kris tests out Princess Peach Showtime with a number of different audiences, all of whom have different opinions on the game, makes big plans to finally finish off Contra:Operation Galuga, and spends more quality time with his Atari VCS with games Milli & Greg, Cash Cow DX, and more.
In Week Old News, Tekken flirts with Waffle House, ex-PlayStation boss rips some numbers out of his butt, the Nuon gets a fresh re-release, Dadish goes 3D, and what is that I see? IS that EVEN MORE? Why yes, it is! Check it out!

Ep.508 – SAG Episode 508: The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog - Robotnik Jr.

The SAG Cartoon Express speeds along with Sonic!

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan, Kris, and Dean board the SAG Cartoon Express to discuss a classic episode of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. This was the “funny” one, and boy are those quotation marks doing some heavy lifting. Between Dr. Robotnik’s really weird design, to some very annoying catchphrases, this show was certainly a trip. How did the team enjoy it? Find out now! At the top of the show, Dean had some jewelry issues, and spent a lot of time with Helldivers, while Dan lamented the fact that it isn’t couch co-op. He did get to check out the new Godzilla x Kong movie with his daughter though, and he picked up MLB: The Show and had himself a very good time. Meanwhile, Kris discovered a hidden box of urine in his house, and fell in love with Cash Cow DX, the latest from the studio who brought you Donut Dodo! In Week Old News, layoffs abound, but it’s actually not as terrible as it’s been, there’s a new Tetris sequel prototype out in the world, Mario Maker’s final level has been beaten, and more!

Ep.507 – SAG Episode 507: What Games Came Out in March 10, 20, 30, and 40 Years Ago?

The untold dangers of the Yamato Spear

Show Notes

On this week’s podcast, Dan and Kris tackle the March 2024 10-20-30-40, where they look back at notable games released this month 10, 20, 30, and 40 years ago. PS4 and Xbox One struggle to put out anything of value, while the Xbox actually has a better month than the almighty PS2 for a change. The NES gets pair of excellent games late into its life, Genesis, SNEs, and even TG16 have a remarkable streak that the 3DO just can’t keep alive, and the Atari 2600 gets some of the absolute best Activision has ever made. At the top of the show, Dan came prepared with both a story to tell AND a handful of jokes, while Kris laments the state of internet popularity. Smash JT jumped into the comments section for an odd yet friendly exchange, and Princess Peach Showtime arrives! In Week Old News, things are looking grim over at Kotaku, PlayStation has a very expected failure and an unexpected success, apparently there was a whole Will Smith zombie game that nobody knew about, and more!
